Holiday Club
Our club focuses on cultural activities for children of African heritage. However, children of other ethnic groups interested in learning about our culture and traditions are welcome to join us.
We have a theme that the children are made aware of, and we build our activities around this theme. For example, we may look at how Christmas is celebrated in the Caribbean. We would incorporate mask-making, which originated in Africa and is embedded in the lives of several Caribbean islands.
Last Easter, our theme was "Easter in East Africa." The children explored how they dressed at Easter and incorporated jewellery-making into our arts and crafts. The countries that are not landlocked have a beach outing as a part of the celebration, so we made a seascape. Food is central to the Easter celebration, so we ended with a reenactment of the feast by having a BBQ. The lovely weather allowed us to sit in the side garden and have our BBQ lunch while Afrobeats played.
Some physical activities encourage team building, skill development, and learning about cultural games. Health Education is one of the children's favourites, as we provide demonstrations and learn about cultural foods and healthy eating. They have fun making things, some of which they take home and share; however, they often eat them before they get picked up. The children carry out research and do presentations. All the children get involved, and with the varied activities, they develop a range of skill sets.
